Explaination of GenConnect Boards

GENCONNECT BOARDS

Rootsweb Data Cooperative is the entity that is providing us with the space to post a web page and to maintain the mailing list. Another service being hosted by Rootsweb Genealogical Data Cooperative is the GenConnect Boards. GenConnect boards give surname researchers a place to "collect" all the data for that particular surname. Any data that does not "fit" into a specific board may be placed in the query board. (As other boards are created, then I may move the data to the board it fits.)

For those of you that have not yet become familiar with GenConnect, it is a web-based automated query and record management system. You can see your queries, wills, pension, obits, etc., posted immediately and the posts are also threaded, meaning responses to a previously posted board will appear immediately under that query. Each GenConnect board is indexed by the Global Search Engine on a weekly basis. Another feature of GenConnect is automatic e-mail notification. for any item you have posted, you have the option to receive automatic e-mail notification each time a new post appears on that board.

QUERIES

Most queries that are appropriate for the mailing list can also be posted to this board. It's not a matter of having to choose whether to post your query to just the mailing list or to just the board. You can post the same query both places... but for different reasons. Questions that may start a lively debate may be sent to the mailing list so a "real time" discussion can take place. Later you may want to post the query to the query board where it will remain visible on the board for several months, especially if you didn't get an complete answer. Or your really tough questions might be better suited to the queries board. Also because your query will remain visible for months, the queries board is a very good place to post your "dead end," "brick wall," and "most wanted" type of queries, especially if you have received no answer to your query on the mailing list.

Please restrict your queries to this board only. Queries posted to any of the other non-query boards may be deleted without notice, as will queries not pertaining to that surname. Also be aware that I may contact you for confirmation of the query, (or other data) . If you are posting data (other than queries) please put your source.

FOR THE FOLLOWING BOARDS

You MUST state source. If you are taking the information from a book, newspaper, or other publication, be sure you are not violating copyright laws. "Usually" books and other publications published before 1925 are out of copyright. When in doubt, check with me first <[email protected]> Any posts found to be in violation of copyright will be removed without notice.

BIBLE RECORDS

This board is to be used for posting bible records. Please list source, who currently has bible, etc. If the bible is also listed in a state/county archive, please give the link and who submitted the bible record.

BIOGRAPHIES

Brief and/or abstracted biographies of the (surname) families, or biographies that mention the (surname) families may be posted here. I would prefer that you "abstract" the bio for the board, but then place the bio in its entirety in the proper county archives. It would be best that you observe the 75 year rule because of copyright. (No bio after about 1925 to be posted–thanks.) Please list source, who currently has record, etc. If the record is also listed in a state/county archive, please give the link and who submitted the record.

DEEDS

Any deeds pertaining to the (surname) may be posted here, and those stating the (surname) in its text. I would prefer that you "abstract" the deed for the board, but then place the deed in its entirety in the proper county archives. As deeds are usually registered in courthouses, they are considered public records and there is not any copyright. Please list source, who currently has record, etc. If the record is also listed in a state/county archive, please give the link and who submitted the record.

OBITUARIES

Transcriptions of the (surname) Obits, or obits that mention the (surname) families may be posted here. I would prefer that you "abstract" the obit for the board, but then place the obit in its entirety in the proper county archives if allowed. (Those with a "byline" and/or a "photo" are usually copyrighted. Those that follow a "format" that is used daily are usually okay to post in their entirety.) It would be best that you observe the 75 year rule because of copyright. (No full obits after about 1925 to be posted–abstracts ONLY thanks.) Please list source, who currently has record, etc. If the record is also listed in a state/county archive, please give the link and who submitted the record.

PENSIONS

Transcription of pension files dealing with the (surname) families or that mention the (surname) families may be posted here. I would prefer that you "abstract" the pension file for the board, but then place the pension in its entirety in the proper county archives. Pensions are considered public records and there is not any copyright. Please list source, who currently has record, etc. If the record is also listed in a state/county archive, please give the link and who submitted the record.

WILLS

Transcription of wills dealing with the (surname) families or that mention the (surname) families may be posted here. I would prefer that you "abstract" the will for the board, but then place the will in its entirety in the archives. As wills are usually registered in courthouses, they are considered public records and there is not any copyright. Please list source, who currently has record, etc. If the record is also listed in a state/county archive, please give the link and who submitted the record.
